Saturday 10th March – walk **** Illa de Buda – misty start then sunny
and hot with rain late.
Good night on the sand spit that makes up the Platja de Trabucador and woke
to a cloudy/misty start. The best bit was seeing so many birds from lying
in bed! Flamingos and lots of small waders and then best of all a pair of
Hoopoes pecking the ground right near the van. They are beautiful and
really unusual birds – what a treat – we have never had such a good
view of them :) We are quite happy to stay out here as we don’t want to
head up into the Pyrennes at the weekend, plus the forecast says there
might be some wind and it would be good to give the Port dels Alfacs a try.
My original plan was to amuse ourselves out on the Delta during the day
then perhaps park at Sant Carles and windsurf there on Sunday but as usual
things didn’t work out that way:) After breakfast we set off to explore
the bottom right hand corner of the Delta as we haven’t been there
before. Passing loads of birds in the etangs including lots of Flamingos
and Marsh Harriers everywhere we soon reached Eucaliptus a small resort of
apartments and a campsite, it was closed! There was a carpark with several
campers in - some looked like they had been there awhile! It was then into
the very neat and tidy Els Muntells passing a small hatchback which had
recently crashed into the ditch! We stopped to check there was no one
inside! Ending up in Sant Jaume we know the Lidl was just across the River
l’Ebre at Deltabre so made a short detour there. The Illa de Buda has
always sounded intriguing so we crossed the river and drove there. The
landscape is amazing really just mile after flat mile of rice fields and
birds. We followed the river all the way with several nice places to stop
and then the road turned right as the river branched off forming the Illa.
Just short of the end of the road there is a large viewing tower to take in
the beauty of the area. The sun was now out and you could see the whole
Ille and there is water everywhere making it perfect for birds. There were
pictures of birds to be seen including a Purple Swamp hen - like a large
Moorhen and we actually spotted one, that’s a first:) It was then a short
distance to the beach at the end, the river that forms the Illa doesn’t
actually reach the sea as sand has formed a bank cutting it off! There is
the usual no overnight camping signs at the carpark a popular spot with
local fisherman to fish in the rolling surf:) There was some derelict
wooden structures on the beach that were once beach bars and a 40 foot
trailer long since abandoned that someone had turned into a makeshift home,
what an eyesore. We parked and took some tasty Lidl snack bread sticks and
water and went for a walk, although there was a road onto the Illa it had a
barrier and the whole Illa was roped off saying no access because of
nesting birds so we walked the other way along the beach back towards
Eucaliptus which then joins the beach we parked at last night. We walked
for a couple of hours and must have covered 4/5 miles along a beautiful
wavy beach and the nature reserve inland. We had busy Sandpipers dancing in
and out of the water and yet more Hoopoes. It was now nice and warm in the
light winds so found a large driftwood log for our snacks before heading
back. We didn’t fancy staying here the night so returned to last
night’s place. As it as a lovely sunny Saturday afternoon it was busy,
several kitesurfers and even a couple of windsurfers were here but the wind
was unfortunately too light for me. We parked in our usual place but were
right in front of the picnic tables and a nice Spanish lady said their
family had lost their view so we moved a bit along. We had lunch and
enjoyed the sun before it clouded over and started to rain! Then nearing
dark Mag noticed that the tide was getting close to the van so we moved to
higher ground and hope we are not washed away in the night!
